And since bits of it (hey, her high-profile politician father is spending a lot of time in the hospital) would probably make the news elsewhere, if your character is smart and cares enough they can probably put it together. [ She hated that expression. It didn't look good on him, and it made her chest feel heavy. And as far as she knew, she had been the one to put it there. Her eyes welled up, just a bit. Nothing was going to fall just yet. ]

I -- the man who did this to you. [ He breathed and stared down at the tile floor, the tip of his bright red. His knuckles were still raw from his fight with Alfred, and they stung now as he squeezed. ] I just wish I could just...

[ Matthew didn't dare continue his sentence. This wasn't the time for useless thoughts like that. His grip loosened. ] F-forgive me, it's a foolish thought. The Aurors are taking care of him now.

Matthew, if you're going to get into fights, bring gloves, your hands look terrible... [ She brought his hand closer to her face, for inspection. ] And your hair...

Aurors needed my blood to stain their robes before they even had a clue. I'm not expecting much out of them.

[ Alright, sitting up had been a terrible idea. With a partly stifled groan, she laid back down, doing her best not to curse under her breath. Lili's voice grew quiet, as she glanced nervously at the door, and back at Matthew. ]

You...know what happened, don't you? He was defending himself.

I don't exactly plan to get into fights, but I'll keep that in mind. My hair will grow back in time...

[ Matthew flashed a humorless smile that quickly faded as she settled back down. Worried, he drew his chair closer to the bed and ran his thumb over her fingers. ]

... Y-yes, I do.

[ He slumped forward and rest his head against her hand and mattress. ]

You're not even of age, Lili, how could have possibly taken him on? The Aurors might seem incompetent, but at least they're properly trained...

Training doesn't do them a bit of good if they can't even figure out who he is.

[ Lili rolled her eyes, with a groan. ]

There was none. Only the word of a teenage girl, saying she was taunted during that disaster at the Ministry. Which, nobody else would have noticed, as they were all too busy fending for themselves.

I knew I was right. I wouldn't have been risking my life, had I been wrong, anyway.

Lili! [ He suddenly sat upright, the volume of his voice steadily rising. ] You shouldn't have been risking your life in the first place! You're talking about your life as if you have more than one, and you -- don't be so bloody nonchalant about it!

[ With a groan, he cut himself on and pulled back to slump back in the chair, cradling his head in his hands.]

...sorry. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. It's too late speculation anyway. I was little help then, I'm little help now. I'm just grateful that you're alive.

What else was I supposed to do, then? I didn't have any other options!

[ She knew she deserved to be yelled at, but it felt so wrong coming out of Matthew. ]

[ A tense silence. Then Matthew speaks, softly, but not without a hint of bitterness. ]

You told Alfred.

[ Lili turned away, looking at the fingers laced together in her lap. ]

I never planned on that.

It seems like you didn't plan on a lot of things.

[ The warmth left his voice. He was frustrated again - not specifically at Lili, but at everything. ]

... I fought him a few days ago. We set each other on fire.

[ ...ouch. She sniffed, unable to hold tears back any longer. ]

Matthew, it was at camp, and you were already upset with me over something so insignificant as the Hikaru thing, how was I supposed to tell you I was going to go kill someone?

[ The guilt bubbled back up again. Not, she realized, like it had ever left in the first place. She'd regretting telling Alfred before the words had even finished leaving her lips, but she'd been able to live with it, when she was sure Matthew wouldn't have found out. ]

Do you think I wouldn't have listened? [ Strained. ] I knew you were keeping something from me, Lili. I should have asked what. I'm sorry - I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you.

[ Matthew glanced at her tears, then looked away. ]

What would you have done? Try to stop me? Tell someone, to make sure I'd never get the chance? Sit quietly, knowing that I'm going on a suicide mission? It would have only hurt you more if you knew.

[ Her arm came up, to wipe at her eyes with the back of her hand. Deep breaths.]

Is he okay?

[ In addition to everything else, her influence made them fight. Violently, this time. Her hand held her forehead, keeping herself steady as she fought to suppress a sob. ]

I don't know! Alfred asked me the same exact sodding question, and if you want me to be perfectly honest, I don't know what I would have done! I wasn't given the chance! Please don't.. Please don't underestimate me.

[ Without looking at her, he reached for her hand. Oh bollocks, she was crying. Calm down, Matthew, calm down. ]

He's okay. I'm okay. We've made up. Fin was in the hospital at the time and he was just as upset as I was, so we... well we aren't very good at this talking business. [ Understatement of the century. ]

I didn't want to tell anyone at all! If I had succeeded, you'd have been an accessory to murder. I was protecting you! I never wanted you to get involved, you don't deserve any of this.

[ She takes his hand back in hers, where it belongs, but it doesn't calm her down. ]

Fin? What did she do?

[ Why couldn't she put that much worry into her own welfare? He had no idea what to say or do. His first instinct was to hug her, hold her in his arms once more, but he was unaware of the extent of her injuries. ]

...Fin's alright. [ Physically, anyway. ] P-perhaps you should get some more rest now, eh?

I don't want to rest.

[ I can't. ]

I'm sorry. It wasn't supposed to happen like this.

[ Matthew frowned, but had no energy and desire to continue an argument. He couldn't imagine what Lili must have felt in comparison. ]

W-what matters now is your recovery. [ Finally, he looked her in the eye. ] And that you don't pull something like this again. I'm sorry, Lili, but I'm rather selfish and prefer you living and breathing and talking and everything.

[ Lili's laugh was half-hearted, but her smile was truthful. Even if it looked ridiculous, smiling while she blew her nose. Her hand wiped a tear from her eye, before she looked back at him. ]

How terrible of you. Don't worry. It won't happen again.
