Sebastian spoke to you all? Well, don't listen to him, everything he says is rubbish. He's rubbish.

He's practically a Squib, you know. Hasn't a clue what he's talking about.

((ooc: Okay so. Important French Purebloods and such will probably know she was "attacked" by a Death Eater. And since bits of it (hey, her high-profile politician father is spending a lot of time in the hospital) would probably make the news elsewhere, if your character is smart and cares enough they can probably put it together. Or even nosy.))

What else was I supposed to do, then? I didn't have any other options!

[ She knew she deserved to be yelled at, but it felt so wrong coming out of Matthew. ]

You weren't any help because I didn't want any.

[ A tense silence. Then Matthew speaks, softly, but not without a hint of bitterness. ]

You told Alfred.

[ Lili turned away, looking at the fingers laced together in her lap. ]

I never planned on that.

It seems like you didn't plan on a lot of things.

[ The warmth left his voice. He was frustrated again - not specifically at Lili, but at everything. ]

... I fought him a few days ago. We set each other on fire.

[ ...ouch. She sniffed, unable to hold tears back any longer. ]

Matthew, it was at camp, and you were already upset with me over something so insignificant as the Hikaru thing, how was I supposed to tell you I was going to go kill someone?

[ The guilt bubbled back up again. Not, she realized, like it had ever left in the first place. She'd regretting telling Alfred before the words had even finished leaving her lips, but she'd been able to live with it, when she was sure Matthew wouldn't have found out. ]

Do you think I wouldn't have listened? [ Strained. ] I knew you were keeping something from me, Lili. I should have asked what. I'm sorry - I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you.

[ Matthew glanced at her tears, then looked away. ]

Yes.

What would you have done? Try to stop me? Tell someone, to make sure I'd never get the chance? Sit quietly, knowing that I'm going on a suicide mission? It would have only hurt you more if you knew.

[ Her arm came up, to wipe at her eyes with the back of her hand. Deep breaths.]

Is he okay?

[ In addition to everything else, her influence made them fight. Violently, this time. Her hand held her forehead, keeping herself steady as she fought to suppress a sob. ]

I don't know! Alfred asked me the same exact sodding question, and if you want me to be perfectly honest, I don't know what I would have done! I wasn't given the chance! Please don't.. Please don't underestimate me.

[ Without looking at her, he reached for her hand. Oh bollocks, she was crying. Calm down, Matthew, calm down. ]

He's okay. I'm okay. We've made up. Fin was in the hospital at the time and he was just as upset as I was, so we... well we aren't very good at this talking business. [ Understatement of the century. ]

I didn't want to tell anyone at all! If I had succeeded, you'd have been an accessory to murder. I was protecting you! I never wanted you to get involved, you don't deserve any of this.

[ She takes his hand back in hers, where it belongs, but it doesn't calm her down. ]

Fin? What did she do?

Oh Lili...

[ Why couldn't she put that much worry into her own welfare? He had no idea what to say or do. His first instinct was to hug her, hold her in his arms once more, but he was unaware of the extent of her injuries. ]

...Fin's alright. [ Physically, anyway. ] P-perhaps you should get some more rest now, eh?

I don't want to rest.

[ I can't. ]

I'm sorry. It wasn't supposed to happen like this.

[ Matthew frowned, but had no energy and desire to continue an argument. He couldn't imagine what Lili must have felt in comparison. ]

W-what matters now is your recovery. [ Finally, he looked her in the eye. ] And that you don't pull something like this again. I'm sorry, Lili, but I'm rather selfish and prefer you living and breathing and talking and everything.

[ Lili's laugh was half-hearted, but her smile was truthful. Even if it looked ridiculous, smiling while she blew her nose. Her hand wiped a tear from her eye, before she looked back at him. ]

How terrible of you. Don't worry. It won't happen again.

[ Despite everything that weighed down on him now, Matthew grinned when she finally smiled, wide and goofy. His mouth had gotten far too much damage this summer, but at least he could still smile. ]

You're asking something impossible from me, I'm afraid. And I should hope that it won't. I don't know what I'd do...

[ So that was it? No hellfire or heartbreak or storming out. For whatever reason, Matthew was still here, and the world wasn't ending. She took a deep breath. No more crying, there's no reason for that. ]

You have too much patience, Matthew. I can't believe you're still sitting here.

[ Matthew furrowed his eyebrows, smile turning wry. ]

...like I said before, I prefer you living, breathing, talking. Now that you've proven to be perfectly adequate in all those qualities, I see no reason to leave.

I meant that I can't believe you're willing to put up with this.

...I love you.

[ Because that answered everything. ]

[ It was enough. Lili let out something between a laugh and a sob, smiling up at him. ]

I love you, too. You're amazing, Matthew, and Merlin knows I don't deserve it.

[ Like clockwork, Matthew flushed. He reached to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. ]

N-nonsense. You just make me stubborn, eh?

[ Lili caught his hand before it pulled away, holding it with her while she moved over on the bed. ]

Here. I'll get some rest if you rest with me, you could use it, too.

What about your father?

[ But he already had one knee on the bed, body wholly intent to settle down besides her. ]

It's completely innocent. I'm a terrified girl in need of comfort, he won't deny me that. Especially not if it's you.

...a-alright.

[ Matthew made himself as comfortable as possible besides her, arms opening in silent invitation. ]

I'd just rather not be awake when he comes in the room.

[ She took the invitation happily, wrapping an arm around him. Lili's head nestled into his chest, and let out a relieved sigh. She missed this. It felt like forever since they'd been like that, warm and loving and safe. She relaxed, pressing a short kiss against his lips. ]

Go to sleep, then. But I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, he adores you.
